What is Chhath Puja
Chhath Puja is one of the ancient festivals, dedicated to Sun God and his sister Chhathi Maiya, daughter of Lord Brahma. This Vedic festival of great cultural and spiritual significance is celebrated in eastern Indian states Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, and their diaspora across the globe. It is the only festival that has been celebrated since the Vedic period and is associated with worshiping Mother Nature for the well-being of humanity.
Who Is Chhathi Maiya or Chhathi Maata?
According to the Hindu mythology, Chhathi Maiya is the incarnation of one of the forms of Goddess Durga, Devi Katyayni, who is worshiped on the sixth day of Navaratri. She is the daughter of Lord Brahma, the creator of the universe. Legend has it that, during the creation of the universe, Lord Brahma divided himself into two parts- one female and another of male.
The female form became Mother Nature, which was later divided into six parts. The last part out of the six, was full of motherly love, compassion, and dedication, for all beings and was hence called Chhathi Maiya.
History of Chhath Puja
According to the Vedas and Hindu inscriptions, Chhath Puja has been celebrated since the early Vedic period. During that era, Hindu sages performed rituals and chanted mantras from Rigveda. While performing the Puja, these sages exposed themselves to the sunlight to get energy and life force. It is believed that Lord Rama was associated with the inception of Chhath Puja. When Lord Rama, Maata Site, and his brother Laxma returned home from exile, he and his wife Sita observed fast in honor of the Sun God and broke it after the sunset.
Even Mahabharata too has mentioned about Chhath Puja, where Karna, the son of Sun God and Kunti, used to offer prayers while standing in the water. There is another mention about the similar ritual, which was performed by Draupadi and Pandavas.
Significance
According to Hindu religion, Sun has power to heal several health conditions and offers longevity, prosperity, well-being, positivity, and progress. Devotees perform rigorous rituals for four days, and observe two days of Nirjala Vrat or Anhydrous Fast.
This four-days festival begins on the fourth day after Diwali. The first day involves devotees taking holy dip in water, and offering prayers to Sun God. After the sunset, they bring home the holy water and prepare offerings for the next day. The second day is called Kharna (you can also find Kharna Chhath Puja Status here), when devotees keep fast for the whole day, which ends only after the sunset. On the third day too, devotees keep Anhydrous Fast and prepare offerings, including prasad, like thekwa, gur ki kheer (jaggery rice pudding), puri, and other seasonal fruits. And on the last day, devotees again assemble on the river early in the morning to worship the rising sun. After that, they break their fast and distribute prasad among themselves.
